Peggy’s Plant PlannerA LITTLE ROOM TO GROW

Growing note 12 · Ireland & UK

Can you grow tomatoes indoors in Ireland?

Starting tomatoes in the house is straightforward enough. Keeping a mature plant there until harvest is a different question. A warm room does not replace good summer light.

Which “indoors” do you mean?

A greenhouse provides much more surrounding light than many rooms. A sunny conservatory may be useful but can overheat. A narrow, shaded kitchen sill may suit seedlings briefly without providing the space or light a mature tomato needs. Assess the final position before sowing.

RHS recommends a warm windowsill for germination and maximum light as soon as seedlings appear. For greenhouse crops it gives late February to mid-March as a sowing window; for plants destined outdoors, late March to early April. Those are not instructions to grow a full winter crop in a normal living room.

Choose the plant’s shape, not just the fruit

A compact bush or genuinely dwarf variety is easier to accommodate in a limited space than a vigorous cordon. Read the eventual height and spread on the packet. “Cherry” describes fruit size, not necessarily a small plant. Bush types retain side-shoots; cordon types need support and regular side-shoot removal. Pruning all types alike can remove potential crop.

Allow a suitable final container, support if needed, and room to water without damaging a sill or floor. RHS gives a 30–45cm pot for one tomato plant; dimensions and compost volume both matter. A decorative cover pot still needs safe drainage management.

Light, water and air

Choose the brightest suitable summer position, with space for leaves rather than pressing the plant against glass. Ventilate a conservatory or greenhouse so heat does not build unchecked. Keep compost evenly moist; large swings can contribute to fruit splitting and blossom-end rot. Follow a suitable high-potassium feed’s label once the first fruits begin to swell, consistent with RHS guidance.

Do not buy an indoor grow light on the assumption any desk lamp will do. Product coverage, safe installation, energy cost and the full plant’s size all need evaluating. This guide does not assess particular lights or promise a return on electricity costs.

Flowers are not yet fruit

Tomatoes are self-fertile, but pollen still needs to move within the flower. RHS suggests gently tapping or shaking fully open flowers to help transfer. In a greenhouse, ventilation also allows pollinating insects access. Do not shake stems hard enough to damage flowers.

A sensible first trial

Try one appropriately small plant in a genuinely bright space. Record flowering, fruit set and the point when the pot outgrew the window. If light or room is insufficient, an outdoor sheltered summer position or suitable greenhouse may be a better plan next year.
